The UMass Foundation Endowment is managed with the objective of generating investment returns that outpace both the annual spending rate and inflation to ensure the endowment exists in perpetuity. The investing strategy is based on five core tenets: a long-term focus, an equity bias, sufficient diversification, partnership with extraordinary managers and a bottom-up portfolio construction. Individual endowment funds are pooled together and invested in one portfolio managed by an in-house investment team with direct oversight by the Investment Committee of the UMass Foundation. Each year, a percentage of the endowment’s assets is distributed to benefit the University while the rest is reinvested to ensure growth and maintain spending power far into the future.
