Alex Godwin Coutinho

Founded in 2002, Infectious Diseases Institute is a national non-profit organization wholly owned by Makerere University and affiliated with the Ministry of Health. The private company is based in Kampala, Uganda. Initially established to address Uganda’s HIV crisis, the institute has expanded its scope to strengthen health systems across Uganda and other African countries to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious diseases and emerging health threats. It operates in most of Uganda’s districts and partners with institutions in 23 African countries and beyond, implementing programs in prevention, diagnosis, care and treatment, emergency response, training, research, laboratory services, health systems strengthening, and health security. The institute contributes to Uganda’s HIV response, conducts clinical research, and manages projects on HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, antimicrobial resistance, emerging diseases, and integration of non-communicable diseases. It hosts specialized units such as accredited laboratories and the African Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data-Intensive Sciences, collaborating with partners to advance research and health security initiatives. The institute also focuses on capacity building by training healthcare workers and laboratory personnel, promoting evidence-based interventions, community engagement, and policy advocacy to build resilient health systems.
