The firm prefers investment opportunities where they can back a strong management team. However, when requested, they will use their resources to identify executives to lead a management buyout. In evaluating investment candidates, Richards looks for the following: profitable and strategically sound companies that are underperforming relative to their potential, family-owned businesses in need of capital to smooth generational transfer issues, rapidly growing businesses seeking equity to fund internal growth and traditional management led buyouts of private companies or divisions of larger companies. They also seek companies with the potential to be leaders in consolidating industries, divestitures or spin-offs of larger companies, companies whose immediate financial obligations cloud a promising future and companies with a proprietary product or process. The firm also invests selectively in early-stage companies that have developed a unique product or service in an unexploited market niche. Richards is not interested in investments involving oil and gas exploration, commercial banking, high technology research and development, real estate and bankruptcy reorganizations.
