Michael Shum

Mike is co-founder and Chief Investment Officer of Accial Capital.
As Chief Investment Officer, Mike manages Accial Capital’s global portfolio and oversees the investment process, including portfolio construction, term sheet negotiation, and company due diligence.
He works closely with CEOs and founders of fintech lending platforms, crafting win-win partnerships that allow them to scale.
Since joining as a founder at Accial Capital in 2018, he has led investments in over 10 different lenders.
Mike has experience in the domains of finance, emerging markets, and start-ups.
From 2006, Mike worked in risk and in front office positions at RBC, JPMorgan, and HSBC with a focus on emerging market structured credit and fixed income.
He ran one of the largest portfolios at HSBC with billions of USD in positions, managing Emerging Market Asia FX derivatives risk.
Mike is also a serial entrepreneur, having founded Investment Frontier, a news site dedicated to frontier market investing, and HK Recycles, a tech-enabled recycling company in Hong Kong that was sold to an impact-focused VC.
Mike finished his undergrad in international business from the Schulich School of Business at York University in Toronto, completed courses in computer science at Stanford, and is completing a master’s in data science at UC Berkeley.
Outside of work, Mike plays hockey, spends time with his two young children, and cheers on Toronto-based sports teams.
