Salio was established in 2006 to develop novel smart materials, also referred to as 'Stimuli Responsive Materials (SMRs)'. Salio's molecular architecture for smart materials developed from research initially performed in the Laboratories of Prof. Avigdor Scherz at the Weizmann Institute. Salio has exclusively licensed patents from Yeda, the technology transfer arm of the WIS, which is also a shareholder in the company, protecting the IP generated at the WIS. The headquarters and labs are located in Ness Ziona, Israel, in the science park neighboring the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS). Salio implements a unique and commercially attractive approach for incorporating properly adapted 'smart monomers' to new materials. Their approach merges between tailor-made, selective binding properties (Molecularly Imprinted Polymers, MIPs) and a catch-and-release, on-off, switching mechanism for molecular binding. This technology that was generated by Salio is also IP protected and belongs exclusively to the company.
