Dr. Josef Baumgartner is a Senior Economist at Österreichisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung.
He has worked in the Research Group "Macroeconomics and European Economic Policy" since 1996.
His regular research activities include inflation analyses and forecasts as well as the provision of medium-term forecasts (project leader) and economic policy simulations with WIFO Macromod, an econometric model of the Austrian economy.
Before joining WIFO, he was an assistant professor at the Department of Economics at the Vienna University of Technology (1994-1996) and lecturer for economics at the University of Linz (1993-2004), the Vienna University of Technology (1995-1997), the Vienna University of Economics and Business and the Vienna University of Applied Sciences (2006-2008).
He was a visiting researcher at the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB; 2002 to 2003) and a member of the ESCB Inflation Persistence Network (IPN; on behalf of the OeNB from 2003 to 2005).
In 2009, he was Acting Desk Officer for Austria at the DG Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission in Brussels.
In 2011 and 2012 (each fall term) he was a visiting scholar at The Europe Center at Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA).
In addition to WIFO publications and project reports, his research was published in international journals (German Economic Review, Managerial and Decision Economics or Empirica – Journal of European Economics).
He studied Economics and Econometrics at the University of Linz (MA in Economics), the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna (IHS), and the Vienna University of Economics and Business (Ph.D.
in Statistics and Economics).
