Ian Johnson

Ian co-founded Helmsman Capital in 2002 and, together with Douglas Potter, arranged the management buyout of the joint interests of Macquarie Bank and McGrathNicol in 2007.
Prior to this he was retained by Macquarie Bank to manage distressed assets and has a 20 year history in corporate, project and structured finance.
In a consultancy capacity, he has provided risk management advice to major financial institutions and has been involved in the bank workouts of some of Australia’s major corporate failures.
Ian’s focus is in the negotiating of distressed acquisitions, financial structuring, strategic direction and value accretion for investee companies.
His portfolio director responsibilities have included investments in Walter Mining, and WDS Ltd (including its successful initial public listing in December 2006).
Ian holds a Master of Management from Macquarie Graduate School of Management and is the current Chairman of the Turnaround Management Association in Australia.
