The firm was founded in 1931 and formerly known as Wayne Hummer Investments LLC and changed their name to Wintrust Investments LLC in 2018. They are a subsidiary of Wintrust Bank, NA, which is owned by Wintrust Financial Corp. (NASDAQ: WTFC). WTI provides portfolio management services to individuals, high-net worth individuals, banking or thrift institutions, corporate pension and profit-sharing plans, foundations, endowments, trust programs, and other US institutions.

Wintrust Capital Management LLC is a registered investment advisor headquartered in Chicago. The firm is also known as Great Lakes Advisors LLC. Wintrust traces its origin to 1931 when Wayne Hummer, George Barnes and Harry Baum formed a financial services firm that provided investment advice to small and medium-sized banks. In 1981, after serving investors for 50 years, Wayne Hummer Management Co. was formed to provide discretionary, fee-based, investment management services. In 2002, Wayne Hummer Management Co. merged with Wintrust Financial Corp. (NasdaqGS: WTFC), a Chicago-based a financial services holding company and the firm became known as Wintrust Capital Management. Wintrust Capital Management consists of 3 divisions: Wayne Hummer Investments, the Chicago Trust Co. and Wayne Hummer Asset Management Co.
