Jansen is a Professor at the University of Stellenbosch, President of the South African Institute of Race Relations, Vice President of the Academy of Science of South Africa, and former Independent Non-Executive Director at ADvTECH Ltd.
He previously served as Vice Chancellor at the University of the Free State.
Jansen holds a doctorate from Stanford University, a graduate degree from Cornell University, and undergraduate degrees from the University of South Africa and the University of the Western Cape.
