Mr. Shields founded AvTech Ventures in 2001 to assume the management of the Avalon Technology Fund.
He has spent most of his career as a venture capitalist, investment banker, portfolio manager, research analyst and entrepreneur working closely with emerging growth companies that leverage advances in technology to address large market opportunities.
Mr. Shields started his career at First City National Bank and Credit Lyonnais.
In 1984, he joined Technological Investors Management Corporation.
As a Partner and Senior Portfolio Manager, he managed two hedge funds and several institutional portfolios.
Following Technological Investors, he joined LF Rothshchild.
As Senior Vice President and Senior Research Analyst, he provided coverage for several sectors of technology including the semiconductor, communications and storage industries.
After LF Rothschild, he joined Robertson Stephens.
While there, he continued his career as a Research Analyst and then moved to the corporate finance area of the firm.
Following Robertson Stephens, he joined The Chicago Corporation, the second largest investment bank in Chicago.
There he headed its Technology and Healthcare Investment Banking Groups.
After The Chicago Corporation, Mr. Shields joined Integrated Medical Systems (IMS).
Serving as that company's Senior Vice President Corporate Finance and Development.
In 1995, Mr. Shields founded Flemming, Lessard & Shields, LLC (initially named Fredericks, Shields & Co.) which became one of Southern California's most well recognized emerging growth focused investment banks.
A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Mr. Shields received his BA with honors in economics from University of Cincinnati and was a Georgetown Fellow in the MSFS Program at Georgetown University.
He serves on the Boards of Amazingmail, HealthMedia, Innovative IT Solutions, Media.net, Nomadix, Pivotal Post, Rebol Technologies, andTomotherapy.
